Join us in Lloydminster for Cattlemen's Corral & Crop Visions

We're back in Lloyd again Tuesday and Wednesday for the annual Cattlemen's Corral and Crop Visions trade show and presentations. There's over 100 exhibitors from all the major machinery dealers plus seed grain producers and chemical suppliers. There are livestock equipment and handling demos and lots of great speakers. You need to visit www.lloydexh.com for a complete listing. They also have the Campfire & Vittles banquest and seed show awards and auction on Tuesday night. We'll likely see more than 800 people at the event that features a great roast beef supper (of course) and entertainment with the comedy of Big Daddy Tazz from Winnipeg.

In addition, there will be great speakers like Anne Anderson, Austin, Texas a Rancher and Beef Industry Entrepreneur from Rain Creek Ranch, Partner in PMG, Managing Partner in Kebbe Partners.
If not Now, When? is the title of her presentation.
This presentation will really be an informal discussion of the state of the beef industry in North America as it pertains to the individual rancher who raises calves and the feedyards who finish them. We can no longer make a living as we once did raising the raw materials for the country’s beef supply. IF we want to stay “in the business,” we need to do things different. It will be a to the point discussion including at least three options that producers can consider... if they want to stay in the business.

There'll be lots more so make sure you drop down to see the show. Admission is only $6 a person. Breakfast is on at 9 a.m. each morning.

The picture on the right is the State Capital building in Austin, Texas which is Anne's home state.  Anne will be speaking at 10:30 a.m. in the main sales pavilion.
Thanks to our major Show sponsors: Monsanto, Synergy Credit Union and Servus Credit Union in Lloydminster.

She Came, She Saw, She Informed

Did she Conquer? maybe not quite yet but the 200 plus members of the public who showed up on a minus 25 degree night in Bonnyville were rooted to their seats for nearly two hours.

Former PC MLA and cabinet minister Ernie Isley who is now the Mayor of Bonnyville introduced her as Alberta's "Premier in Waiting."

With that, Danielle Smith, newly minted leader of the Wild Rose Alliance Party (WRAP) began by summarizing a number of weak spots with the current government body. The First fiasco was the Royalty Rate Review that she said started the downward trend in drilling and development in Alberta. It drove energy development companies and their money to other locales that had more favourable opportunities. WRAP believes the program was poorly developed and dropped like a bomb into the laps of petroleum producing companies and that there had to be a better way to ensure an equitable outcome could be developed. In fact she said this program has been revamped at least 5 times in the past year by the current government to try and make it work.

The next target was the budget. Smith said we were promised a balanced budget but now we've gone into debt financing with nearly a 5 Million dollar shortfall.

The Health Care story is out of control and they just don't know how to fix it. They (PC party) has just floated out trial balloons and then when faced with opposition have back peddeled and tried to fix it but the damage has already be done because they've lost credibility. They really created more trouble when they cancelled a proposed continuing care facility in Fort McMurray and then bounced Guy Boutilier from Caucus when he criticized them.  Another part of the Health Care problem surrounds the H1N1 program and WRAP believes it needs to be reviewed so it doesn't happen again.

The department of Agriculture was the next problem area that needs fixing or at least streamlining and removal of the cumbersome filing system for producers to get access to programs. They also need to look at alternate revenue streams for the agriculture sector and increase marketing of our products on a national and international scale but that marketing should be left in the hands of the producers, not government.

The last item was integrity and open government. The PCs haven't really been truthful with Albertans when they said they were taking a 15% roll back in wages because only about 5% came off their salaries while the other 10% merely came off an expense allowance each member has.

Rather than just dump on the governing party Smith also came prepared to talk about WRAP's numerous policies that address each of the problem areas and a few more areas that weren't talked about in the summary. They're website lists seven main categories including: democratic reform, economy, education, environment, health care, justice and social. Everything from agriculture to dealing with the feds to showing financial responsibility and accountability in government, health care, education and the judicial system. It is a full list and available on their website http://www.wildrosealliance.ca/ . She ably fielded many questions from the audience ranging from health care to education, agriculture and energy. While she had ready answers for most of the questions, she readily admitted she didn't have all the answers and said she would be counting on her new team and Albertans to begin to find those answers and solutions.

When asked earlier if she thought they could succeed in winning the next election she said "I went into this planning to win, I'm not here to win a miss congeniality contest." She acknowledged that they had a huge amount of work to do between now and then but they are growing. At year end there were 41 constituency associations in place and they believe the party will have a full count by their AGM in June of this year. Once that is established they will be working hard to recruit suitable candidates for the next election.
As to their rising popularity in the polls, she quoted a Ralph Klein back room handler Rod Love who said success in one poll is an anomally but success in four polls, that's a trend.  She went on to say that even if it takes them two elections they will be the party in power.  Albertans don't change their governments regularly but every once in a while they have changed them radically. This could be one of those waves.

Nearly a double win in a double header and More!

Well, fate deals a cruel blow sometimes and just when the Pontiacs thought they had their second game in hand against the last place Drayton Valley Thunder the game got tied in the dieing minutes. 3 to 3 after a bit of an up and down performance and a great two goal effort by Kevin Carthy it would have been nice to see the boys pick up their second win in as many nights. Not so, the Thunder rolled in and scored within the first few seconds of the first overtime period and it was game over. Well, the Pontiacs are still above 500 for the season but will need to win a bunch more to get out of splitting 5th and 6th place in the league where they were at game time. They are in St. Albert on the 5th and then back home on the 9th to host the Sherwood Park Crusaders. Go Pontiacs.

Don't forget, the Opry is back in town on Saturday night as well. You can get you tickets at Tellier's or the door for the show that starts at 7 p.m. at the Lyle Victor Albert Theatre. It always sells out so don't delay. Now I have to figure out how to cheer on the team and get a little musical entertainment in at the same time.
****
Speaking of Musical Entertainment, the Centennial Centre is hosting the Pink Floyd Experience on Tuesday, January 12th, Franklin the Turtle on April 25 and the one and only Randy Travis is coming on May 4th. They say that Randy started out as a dishwasher at the Brown Palace which is just down the road from the big Opryland Hotel in Nashville. A few years back, I along with a couple of buddies from Calgary had the opportunity to go their for a conference and the Brown Palace had some of the best amateur entertainers we had ever seen. Of course Randy T was well on his way by then so we didn't see him but we did meet the dishwasher ... only when we couldn't pay the bill. (Just kidding). Anyway, tickets for these events can be had by calling 780-812-3400 or check them out online at www.centennialcentre.ca.

If you didn't get your gate number sign from the MD for FREE last year, you're going to have to pony up for one this year. Large ones are $75 each and small ones are $35. Don't whine now, you had all year to get them. Anyway, why do you need one. Well, its a lot handier explaning to the police, fire authority or ambulance service how to find your place when the old man puts a screwdriver through his hand. Can you imagine ... Yes, we're just 1.5 miles east of Bill's place and then south on the correction line and look for the third driveway in.  The number system just makes it so much simpler. Here's your Sign!

Quick up date on a political visit from Danielle Smith of the WAP (that's Wild Rose Alliance Party). She'll be here on Wednesday evening the 6th over at the Senior's Drop In Centre. It's a 7:30 start time. Come one and all and bring your questions.

Final item for now, The Bonnyville Ag Society is holding their annual trade show with a bit of a different theme on March 5, 6 and 7th in the Centennial Centre's Flint Field House. Its now called the Home, Farm & Leisure show so it should have a few different types of exhibitors. For a package of information call the Ag Society Office at 780-826-3240. More info will follow.

Now here's a couple items  to lighten your day.

A New Year Prayer for the Elderly

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
The good fortune to run into the ones that I do,
And the eyesight to tell the difference.

Have a great week. Dave
