Hey everyone, Haying in the 30's my favourite charitable organization has just been nominated for the Small Town Heroes Award from UFA.You can vote for them by going to the website www.smalltownheroes.ca and checking out the gallery. Haying in the 30’s was founded in 1999 by Edgar Corbiere. Edgar had a dream to raise money to assist cancer victims and their families with their financial expenses. He wanted to put on a weekend event where all monies raised would be donated back to people who have been diagnosed with cancer. He came up with the idea of using horse drawn equipment to demonstrate farming practices as they were in the 30’s. Such as mowing, thrashing, plowing, road construction, shingle mill, saw mill and many more.

Edgar and many volunteers have created a 1930 community atmosphere at our annual event in Mallaig AB. At the site you will find an original house from the mid 1900’s , blacksmith shop, church, saloon, general store, trappers cabin, old farm stead, barn, and many more. Also we have many numerous displays and activities that can be viewed throughout the August long week-end.

In 1999 the event started with 50 volunteers and has grown to more than 100 volunteers that help make this two day event a success from year to year. Volunteers come from many communities across Alberta.

The event has drawn more than 3000 people per day in attendance on the August long weekend. All of the costs for this function are paid for by volunteers and very generous sponsors in the Lakeland area. 100% of the donations are given to cancer victims for financial aid towards medical expenses, travel, lodging and other expenses. The donations we have been able to raise have exceeded our expectations. In 1999, we were able to help 12 recipients; to date we have helped over 2000 recipients.
